What could be better than practicing yoga outdoors in the fresh air? Nothing, that’s what! Did you know that our homes and offices are inundated with positive ions? Don’t let the name fool you, positive ions are not good for us. Negative ions, on the other hand, are. Where do you find negative ions? Outdoors! The best places to experience the positive effects of negative ions are near bodies of water, waterfalls, fountains, in the woods, in the mountains, during and after a rain shower, and even at home in your own shower to a smaller extent, but you can reap the benefits just by being outdoors. So, come enjoy yoga in the park. It’s free!
Negative and Positive Ions
Positive ions are produced in abundance by electrical equipment such as your TV, clothes dryer, microwave, air conditioner, cell phone, computer, and more. We are always being bombarded with positive ions, even outdoors near electric generators. Positive ions increase the serotonin levels in your brain, which can cause lethargy, depression, insomnia, irritability, and even nausea, migraines, and asthma attacks. Positive ions can also affect the normal function of the thyroid gland. In short, positive ions are not good for the human body.
Negative ions, on the other hand, produce feelings of relaxation and well-being, both of which can help you reach the ultimate yoga experience. They also reduce bacteria and other irritants in the air, and have a stimulating effect on your body and mind. Negative ions have a positive effect on our physical and mental well-being.
Taking Yoga Outdoors
In addition to the positive effects of negative ions, a Swedish study found that simply viewing nature can help increase components associated with yoga practice. When participants looked at “fractals” in nature, which are the organic patterns found in leaves and created by tree branches, they experienced an increase in internal focus and wakeful relaxation, two important components of an effective yoga practice.
