There are numerous benefits to walking, including that it is easy and free. Simply walking 30 minutes a day can help you lose weight, improve your health, and boost your mood:
Weight Loss: A recent University of Pittsburgh study has shown that people who are overweight, did not change any other habits (eating or lifestyle), but began walking at a brisk pace each day for 30 to 60 minutes, lost weight, experienced improved moods, and their bodies were more toned. Another study found that anyone who walked four hours a week gained an average of nine pounds less as they aged, compared to those people who remained sedentary.
Improved Health: Walking can improve your health by preventing colds, osteoporosis, and peripheral artery disease. One-fifth of the elderly population suffers from peripheral artery disease which causes leg pain due to the impairment of blood flow.
Improved Mood: Not only do you enjoy a mood boost directly after walking, a regular regimen makes you feel good about yourself, and improves your self-confidence. Research has proven that walking for only 30 minutes three or four times a week can boost the mood of depressed individuals. Also, six weeks of taking a 20-minute power walk each day can give you the same benefits as a course of psychotherapy.
