Dancing is fun and great exercise, but it also has numerous other health benefits. It is emotionally, mentally, and physically therapeutic. In fact, dance has been discovered to benefit patients with autoimmune diseases, Parkinson’s disease, autism, depression, eating disorders, and more, as well as reducing the risk of dementia. So although our Urban Power Dance class here at Urban Vybe provides cardio and core exercise via a combination of Latin and hip-hop dance and power moves, dance is powerful in a variety of other ways, as well.
The New England Journal of Medicine published a study investigating a variety of leisure activities and the effect each had on the risk of dementia in the elderly. Nine physical activities were studied and compared. Of the nine, dance was the only activity that lowered the risk for dementia in participants. It is believed that the mental effort and social interaction required for dance provides the intellectual and social stimulation that has been proven to reduce the risk of dementia.
Dancing improves brain function in a variety of ways due to the cerebral and cognitive thought processes combined with muscle memory and ‘proprioception’ held in the cerebellum. To increase brain function, research indicates that you only need to dance at least once weekly.
There are numerous benefits associated with the physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of dance. One physical benefit is the reduction of dizziness in people who are prone to it. Other benefits include:
- Increased cardiovascular health
- Increased bone strength
- Improved flexibility
- Improved balance
- Improved body alignment
- Enhanced mood
- Increased self-confidence
- And more
