Yoga can seem like a challenge with all of its different poses, postures, and stretches, but did you know that yoga can be used as a form of physical therapy? Here at Urban Vybe our certified yoga therapist (500-hour E-RYT), Jo Stokes, will lead you through her highly regarded Yoga Therapy session which is a private, small-group session that focuses on individual needs. Do you need yoga therapy?  If yoga seems too challenging for you because of a physical impairment or other illness, yoga therapy may be just what you need.

What is Yoga Therapy?

There are many definitions of yoga therapy but one of the most explanatory is that yoga therapy is specifically designed for people with health challenges who require modifications of yoga moves, poses, stretches, and postures. Research studies have shown that yoga therapy is an effective complementary therapy for several common conditions including:

  • Chronic disease or illness
  • A temporary ailment
  • Pregnancy/childbirth
  • Chronic conditions associated with aging
  • Constant pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • A bad back
  • Vertigo
  • And more

What it Entails

Yoga therapy involves adaptations of breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, postures, and more, according to the individual’s abilities and needs. Specific changes in the joints, muscles, and organs can alter the vital functions of the body, and can be initiated by combining different techniques such as stretches, massage, and alterations of the circulatory patterns. For instance, yoga therapy can help people overcome panic attacks by practicing certain breathing and other techniques which can reset their physiological reaction and also give them a sense of control which reduces their fear and anxiety.

Yoga therapy can help you to maintain health and to recover from illness by moving the vital forces in your body. Other common applications include helping to heal or relieve symptoms of structural problems such as spine misalignments or joint dysfunction. Yoga therapy practice can include traditional yoga breathing, meditation, postural re-alignments, gentle stretching, and strengthening postures to help bring the body into balance for deep healing and increased mobility.
