Meditation is living in and focusing on the present moment.  You are in a meditative state when your thoughts are neutralized but you are still alert and aware.

Meditation is believed to be the most effective way to reduce stress and increase well-being. According to research people who meditate seek medical care significantly less than those who do not. It is believed that meditation reduces the levels of catecholamines in your body. Catecholamines are stress hormones of which high levels can indicate a number of health issues such as acute stress and anxiety.
