Quick bio (how long have you been teaching? Related degrees and/or certifications?) I found yoga in 1999 in a room small enough to be a closet at JC Penney’s corporate HQ. I was 244 lbs and my knees and back were hurting from carrying the extra weight. Fast forward now, I’ve been teaching yoga flows for 4 years. Jo convinced me I had a story to tell and after 18months of her questions, I finally got started. Jo changed my career, my body, my mindset, my finances. She’s extraordinary. I’m currently studying with DeAnna at UV for my 500-hour certification.
What do you teach at Urban Vybe? I teach about yoga, natural remedies, and essential oils. People don’t know that they can get their essential oils from the studio.
What song(s) do you love to play in your classes? Music is my jam! I consider myself a DJ. I loved Jo’s music in her classes when I started practicing 8 years ago. Now I custom blend the BPM tunes from beatles, to zeppelin, to skrillex and kascade. I love going to music festivals and being surrounded by music lovers. I’m so stoked to go see Jack White again!! Got tickets for my birthday!!
Favorite class or workout (outside of your own)? Jo is my favorite teacher EVER. So any spin or yoga class she’s teaching is my favorite. I have gotten back into spin over past 4 months to burn some more calories…because I love bread.
How did you come to Urban Vybe? Jo told me she had an idea to open a studio that was more than yoga. She asked me to come teach the oils workshops and the Friday happy hour class and I was quite honored. I am so proud of Jo and Stacy for having the biggest courage to open up a soulful sweet studio.
What makes Urban Vybe different than other gyms/studios? It’s the heart! We are flawed individuals and we are seeking sanctuary and connection. UV is more than a calorie torcher, it’s a “third place”. Third place is slowly slipping away from our culture. We have home and work and ??. UV fills in the gap of connection and you get to see your friends all the time!
What’s your favorite cheat snack/food/drink? I could live off wine and cheese and donuts. I just wouldn’t live a very lean life.
What’s currently your favorite local small business (can be anything – retail, restaurant, etc)? Mio Nonno is my favorite restaurant in the city. I’m so happy that they opened their 2nd location right down from UV!
Best advice for someone new to your class? Listen for the breath cues and body will follow. It’s all about the breath connection.
What’s something you say (Inspirational quote, phrases, etc.) often in your classes? I say “it’s so good” in my classes all the time that’s become my catch phrase and #hashtag
